Each link provides JDRF's position on the issue, advocacy materials, legislation, and other supportive resources as appropriate. We urge advocates to visit this site periodically to learn what JDRF is doing to advance public policy for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research to identify treatments and a cure. Special Diabetes ProgramFederal funding in the U.S. is crucial to the continued progress of diabetes research. The many extraordinary opportunities on the horizon for type 1 research can only be achieved with the support of this funding. The Special Diabetes Program is a unique federal research program dedicated exclusively to type 1 diabetes research, and it currently provides 35 percent of all federally supported type 1 research. Artificial Pancreas ProjectThrough research and advocacy, JDRF is accelerating the availability of an artificial pancreas--a system that could revolutionize diabetes care and dramatically improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes. An artificial pancreas will integrate two currently available technologies--the continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and the insulin pump--with an algorithm that will provide the right amount of insulin at the right time, significantly reducing the risk of devastating diabetic complications. Stem Cell ResearchStem cells are the essential cellular building blocks that allow the body to regenerate new cells and repair tissue. Stem cell research is an exciting field that holds great potential for curing or treating a variety of diseases by stimulating the regeneration of damaged or non-functioning tissues such as replacing like the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas of individuals with diabetes. Federal government support for stem cell research is vital in giving our nation's scientists and researchers the resources they need to fully explore this promising area. Other Federal IssuesJDRF's mission is focused around funding, facilitating, and advocating for research to improve treatment of and ultimately find a cure for type 1 diabetes. At the federal level, our advocacy efforts are directed in two areas: 1) ensuring that the federal commitment to type 1 diabetes research remains strong and 2) ensuring that a positive regulatory and legislative environment exists for type 1 diabetes research efforts. State IssuesJDRF recognizes that, in recent years, there has been a flurry of legislative activity at the state level related to type 1 diabetes on issues ranging from stem cell research to diabetes management in schools, and more. As an organization, we are not structured to provide staff leadership on all issues in all states, but we recognize that these issues are often important to our volunteers and that sometimes the issues have a direct impact on research. Our policy on state issues is for our local volunteers to take the lead since many advocates have established relationships with their local representatives, and are best able to organize others in their local area. However, JDRF Government Relations staff is available to review pending legislation and provide limited support to assist in state efforts. |
